Summer is characterized by long and sunny days that are ideal for children to enjoy their free time. But what if we take advantage of this time to promote creativity and educate children on environmental values?

It is often said that "today's children are tomorrow's adults," and their habits, attitudes, and knowledge will determine the coming decades. Our youth will be responsible for making decisions that will affect the planet in the future. In this context, recycling becomes as an essential tool to instill the importance of caring for the environment from an early age.
According to data from the European Commission, the urban waste recycling rate in Spain is 38.6%. Although it has improved compared to previous years, this percentage is still insufficient and highlights the need to continue working on environmental education and awareness starting in childhood.
The importance of learning
At home, at school, or in leisure spaces, children should have opportunities to learn about the importance of caring for their surroundings and the environment. This not only promotes a positive relationship with nature, but also develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Recycling, specifically, can be taught through playful and practical activities, as when kids participate in recycling projects, such as making toys from reused materials or sorting waste into different bins, they are not only learning about recycling itself but also about broader concepts like sustainability and the circular economy. In addition, these activities allow them to see the tangible impact of their actions, reinforcing the idea that every small effort counts.
Examples of recycling activities
A simple and educational activity that children can take on is creating flower pots with plastic bottles. This activity not only teaches children about reusing materials, but it can also introduce concepts of biology and ecology, such as the plant life cycle and the importance of roots and leaves. By seeing a pot-grown plant, one that they have made themselves, children can appreciate the value of resources and the positive impact of reusing them.
Another meaningful activity is making musical instruments with aluminum cans, which allows children to explore creativity and music while learning about reusing materials. What's more, they can experiment with different sounds and rhythms to develop their observation and analysis skills. These hands-on experiences are essential for consolidating learning and making environmental concepts more accessible and understandable for children.
Sock puppets are another eco-friendly option that allow children to create stories and perform small plays with old socks, fabric scraps, or accessories like buttons or thread, fostering their imagination and communication skills. This activity not only reuses materials that might otherwise end up in the trash but also provides a fun and educational way to spend time, fostering creativity and artistic expression in young children.
Environmental education in childhood is essential to promote ecological awareness and sustainable habits from an early age. Recycling, as a key component of this education, not only teaches children to manage waste, but also instills values of responsibility and respect for the environment. As Nelson Mandela used to say: "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world."
